ALBANY — A Sasser man died Saturday after being thrown out of a pickup truck in a one-vehicle crash at the intersection of Plamyra Road and Seventh Avenue Saturday morning, officials with the Albany Police Department said.

According to Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the APD, Cecil Elliot, 53, of Sasser, was driving a Ford F250 truck from Seventh Avenue shortly before 10 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle. He was ejected from the pickup during the wreck and later died.

The pickup crossed Palmyra Road in the 1400 block, striking several trees and overturning before coming to rest on its side.

Firefighters at station No. 2, across Palmyra Road from the accident, heard the crash and responded to the emergency, said Keith Ambrose, battalion chief with the Albany Fire Department. Firefighters also notified the Dougherty County EMS and the APD, Ambrose said.

Banks said Elliot was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, along with a single passenger, Amanda Williams, 30, of Albany. Officials said Williams climbed atop the vehicle awaiting rescue.

“We employed our stabilization jacks to stabilize the vehicle,” Ambrose said, “so that firefighters could climb up and pass her down on a stretcher.”

According to Banks, Williams’ injuries were not judged to be life-threatening.

An investigation indicates that Elliot may have had a medical emergency that caused him to lose control of the vehicle, Banks said.
