AMERICUS – Freshman Julia Wells’ score in the 49th minute proved to be significant in several ways as the Lady Hurricanes defeated USC Aiken, 1-0, at Hurricane Field on Saturday afternoon.

Wells, five yards out from the right post, took a cross from Brittney Hill and drove home her first collegiate goal.

It proved to be a milestone score in more ways than one for the Lady Hurricanes soccer program. Not only was it the game-winning goal, but it notched GSW’s first conference win since October 7, 2006. It was the program’s first win over USC Aiken. It snapped a 19-match conference losing streak, and it was GSW’s first goal since Hill drilled the game-winner against LaGrange on September 12.

The Pacers and Lady ‘Canes tied 4-4 in shots on goal. USC Aiken (4-11-1, 0-8-1 PBC) held an 8-2 corner kicks advantage.

GSW freshman goalkeeper Courtney Allison made four saves to record her first collegiate shutout.

Southwestern (3-12, 1-8) travels to Flagler on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. match
