The Terrell County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General are investigating a break in at the post office in Bronwood.

BRONWOOD – The Terrell County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General are investigating a break-in at the post office in Bronwood.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at the post office at 8:30 a.m. on July 25 after a person noticed damage to the ceiling. Terrell County Sheriff Vernon Jessie said the post office clerk reported parts of the ceiling broken in and other signs of damage. When the clerk left her shift, the day before at about 1 p.m., Jessie said she had reported everything was in order.
The service area of the post office, located at 122 Geise St., is left unlocked for public use 24 hours a day. Jessie said it appears someone tried to get to the space behind the locked mailboxes by breaking a hole in the ceiling and climbing through to the other side.
The Sheriff’s Office was called again on July 26 in reference to damage to the locking mechanism on the rear post office door, where it appeared someone had tried to get inside.
Jessie said nothing was stolen from the post office. Stealing mail is a federal crime in the U.S.. This includes letters, packages and other items delivered by the USPS.
A sign on the Bronwood Post Office door says that the self service area will be locked after about 1 p.m. for a temporary period of time. The investigation into the attempted break-in is still ongoing.
