Work from young artists sought for front page
From staff reports
ALBANY — It’s hard to believe that a new school year is just around the corner, but in a couple of weeks students will be heading back to school.
One thing that The Albany Herald has asked young students to do for several years is to submit weather-related drawings, whether done in class or at home, for our page 1A weather forecast. We’re hoping that when the 2015-16 school year starts back up in August, students will again start submitting artwork.
We’ve had an excellent response over the years, but there have been some drawbacks. Two favorite weather subjects of students are fun to draw — snow and tornadoes — but they rarely, if ever, come up in a forecast.
This school year, we’re making a change as far as the “theme” of the submissions. Rather than requiring the drawings to correspond to specific weather conditions, kids will be able to choose their subjects, from the family pet to a holiday illustration to a class assignment. And, yes, even depictions of weather. The only restriction will be the young artist’s imagination.
The Young Artist of the Day artwork will continue to be displayed at its customary spot on the bottom right of page 1A.
Also, each month we’ll take all the drawings used and post them as a photo gallery at www.albanyherald.com.
Here’s how to submit artwork:
• All artwork should be on paper that is of 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches or smaller.
• Artwork can be scanned and submitted by email, but make sure it is in jpeg format and has good resolution.
• An adult — parent, guardian or teacher — should send in the artwork.
• For submissions from schools, the name of the student, current grade level and school should be noted clearly on the back.
• Submissions from home should include the child’s name and hometown; grade level and school are optional.
• Let us know if there are any restrictions on information you want published (for instance, for drawings by students in the Dougherty County School System, only the child’s first name is published at the school system’s request).
• The artwork can be mailed to Young Artist of the Day, c/o The Albany Herald, P.O. Box 48, Albany, GA 31702, dropped off at our offices at 126 N. Washington St. or emailed to [email protected].
• If you have any questions, contact Jim Hendricks at (229) 888-9352 or email [email protected].
