BILL BATES: Drive to Moultrie was a smoky one

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hopefully biomass plant has smoke-reduction technology

On a March 15 drive to Moultrie, I noticed smoky conditions from East Albany almost to Moultrie.

The Albany Herald (March 22) mentioned that the new biomass energy plant located next to the Procter & Gamble plant had started testing the new facility around that time.

If the smoke I observed was from that plant and it is an indication of what the Albany area can expect when it is fully operational, we all are in trouble. With 100 trucks carrying 20-23 tons of fuel material daily it may produce a lot of smoke. Winds from the east could blanket Albany — west winds would blow it toward Moultrie.

Hopefully they have the technology to greatly reduce smoke and particulate matter.
