The 2024 Legislative Session began on Jan. 8, and the first two weeks of the session have moved quickly. We have completed five legislative work days and a full week of budget appropriation hearings. I am proud to continue serving as chairman of the Committee on Banking and Financial Institutions, as this responsibility is one that I value deeply.
Last Thursday, I listened to Gov. Brian Kemp’s State of the State address. I look forward to working alongside Gov. Kemp on reinforcing our commitment to public safety officers, state employees and teachers. On a similar note, I’m ready to pass legislation that provides tax relief, ensures safer communities and provides a reliable array of health care options for Georgians. Georgians should always have access to the path of least resistance, whether it involves economic viability, agriculture or work force development.
This week, Gov. Kemp and various state agencies laid out their proposals through several joint hearings of the Senate and House Committees on Appropriations. Each year, these hearings provide critical information for the General Assembly, helping our respective bodies further advocate for the needs of our state agencies. I was encouraged to learn that our prudence as a fiscally conservative state is beginning to pay off. We have taken advantage of opportunities to place taxpayer dollars back in the pockets of hard-working Georgians.
I’m thankful for Gov. Kemp’s $100 million allocation for regional economic business assistance and his allocation of more than $4 million for renovation and equipment at Tifton’s state agriculture lab. This money will support economic development projects and promote investment in Georgia businesses, including those in the 13th Senate District.
I am fighting hard to get answers from Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. I hear your calls for answers and intend to get those answers that we all deserve. As the legislative session reconvenes for our third week, I will remain committed to fighting for fairness and pushing for information regarding Georgia’s election security.
As always, the interest of Georgia’s citizens and the 13th Senate district is at the forefront of my mind. There is still much work to do, and I appreciate any feedback you might have concerning legislative matters. Thank you for allowing me to be your Senator and please do not hesitate to reach out to my office if you have any questions or concerns.
