Feeding the ‘beast’ in America’s megachurches

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Kevin Palmer

Dear Albany Herald Editor,

Jesus would not be pleased with a church where the reported average salary for a lead pastor is $147,000. Such is the case with megachurches where God is the bait and extracting member’s money by any means necessary is the switch.

Offended, Jesus would enter the megachurches and drive out the religious paraphernalia sellers, shut down the various giving fund hustles, ATMs, and prohibit credit cards. Jesus would say, “My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of thieves.”

Next, Jesus would admonish the megachurch pastors who, contrary to New Testament teaching, burden members to give more than they can afford. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, the Bible says, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

A greedy megachurch pastor is a beast that must be fed.
