FREDDIE POWELL SIMS: Progress continues under Gold Dome

Weeks three and four under the Gold Dome have concluded, and I am inspired by the substantial progress we have achieved for Georgians and the 12th Senate District during the 2024 Legislative Session.
On Jan. 30, I had the honor of hosting my friends from the Albany Chamber of Commerce at the Georgia State Capitol to commemorate Albany-Dougherty County Day. Albany has long served as one of Georgia’s vital economic centers, and I take pride in acknowledging their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts to benefit Albany and its neighboring regions.
Furthermore, I am pleased to announce the introduction of Senate Bill 445. This bill is specifically designed to furnish parents and guardians of sixth-grade students with essential information concerning recommended adolescent vaccinations. In our current post-pandemic landscape, it is imperative that we continue to prioritize our health, particularly among our most vulnerable population — our young children. This bill has garnered early bipartisan support from senators representing southwest Georgia and beyond.
Finally, I lent my support to the passage of House Bill 30 in the Senate. This bill serves the vital purpose of formally defining anti-Semitism for various legal applications, including hate crime prosecution and cases of discrimination. This legislation represents a significant stride in our state’s commitment to supporting its Jewish community in the face of an alarming surge in anti-Semitic incidents nationwide. As I have stated previously, there is no place for hate in the state of Georgia.
As always, I want to invite students between the ages of 12 and 18 to serve as a Capitol pages. I encourage any students interested in the legislative process who want to spend a day at our Capitol to apply for our program using the link https://www.legis.ga.gov/senate/staffing.
Please never hesitate to contact my office regarding any legislative matter. I look forward to assisting you as the 2024 Legislative Session continues.
