WALT SPECHT: Dougherty County schools need an accomplished superintendent
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Superintendent Butch Mosely has made improvements, but underlying problems remain
By Walt Specht
With the superintendent’s position coming open, it is time to realize the system has failed.
While Dr. Mosley has improved things, he hasn’t solved the real problem. You know, the one dealing with poor student participation. Blame it on parenting, teachers or peer pressure, the fact remains the schools are not producing a salable product that justifies the huge investment all taxpayers make in the schools. I say all taxpayers because of the federal funding involved.
The new superintendent needs to come with a proven success in addressing retention, knowledge and performance among students, one that can brag of their success by demonstrated, provable statistics covering all areas of student population. They need to be able to motivate and hold accountable teachers and administrators.
While in some cases, due to availability of candidates, the system has settled for second best in many positions, it is time to make this system desirable to applicants as more than a paycheck. That is what a superintendent needs to be able to do.
So, thanks for what you have accomplished, Dr. Mosley. Problem is the real problem with the schools remains, despite your best efforts.
