WALT SPECHT: Maryland has it figured out

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Photo enforcement of work zones works

On my annual trip to Northern Vermont, I noticed something significant.

Of all the construction and work zones I passed through, only those in Maryland seemed to be controlling the traffic flow speed. In the others, it was mostly ignored.

The difference is Maryland uses photo enforcement in all work zones on the interstate. I was stopped at a rest area when a trooper pulled in next to me. I asked him about the program. He said at first people thought it was fake, an attempt to intimidate.

Then the tickets started coming. Soon folks realized it wasn’t fake, but real. The Truckers were really quick to notice.

So, now it is common for folks to run five under the posted speed in a work zone. Shouldn’t Georgia look at a similar program to protect those working on our roads? The state owes them that much.
