The streak is over. Westwood’s girls 34 game winning streak ended Friday night in Thomasville when Brookwood (2-1) beat the Lady Cats 60-57. The Lady Warriors of Brookwood were down by five points at the half but then outscored Westwood 20-5 in the third period to lead 48-38 going into the final quarter. The Lady Cats came fighting back, but three of Westwood’s seniors fouled out in the fourth quarter and Brookwood took the win.

“Brookwood played a great game,” said Lady Cats Head Coach Derrick Harris. “That was a hostile environment. Their team and fans were fired up.” Westwood missed a lot of free throws in the final quarter that could have made a difference for the Lady Cats. “I told the girls to keep their heads up,” said Harris. “When you lose, you learn. Tonight we learned and we will be better next time.”

Senior center Karlie Jones scored a career-high 30 points and hit eight of nine free throws for the Lady Cats. Senior forward Gracie Pollock, who is normally the leading scorer was held to only two points until the fourth quarter. She ended the night with 10 points. Point guard Brianna Thompson also scored 10.

“We will bounce back,” Harris said. “We will learn from out mistakes and improve. Sometimes great teams lose, but when they do, they come back stronger.”

The Lady Cats (6-1) cannot dwell on the loss because they were scheduled to face Citizens Christian of Douglas Saturday night, then face another serious challenge from Tift Area Academy Tuesday, a game with rival Deerfield Windsor on Friday and then another match up with those same Brookwood Lady Warriors next Saturday.
