LEESBURG — National Signing Day is going to be a big deal at Lee County High School.
The Trojans will have at least three Division I football signees after linebacker Akileis Leroy announced his commitment on Sunday to play for Lane Kiffin at Florida Atlantic.
Leroy will join fullback/defensive lineman Tory Carter (LSU) as well as five-star recruit Aubrey Solomon, who is expected to announce his decision live on ESPN, in signing letters-of-intent.
Leroy is the second player from Georgia to announce his commitment to Kiffin, the former Alabama offensive coordinator. Three-star prospect Chase Hooper from Alpharetta is the other Peach State commitment.
The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Leroy received an offer from Florida Atlantic last Tuesday and he visited the Boca Raton, Fla. campus this weekend.
“(FAU) is getting a hard worker and someone that’s going to make plays,” he told 247sports.com “I’m a hard hitter that’s going to knock people out.”
Leroy, who transferred from Monroe to play at Lee County before the start of the 2016 season, finished with 102 tackles, eight quarterback sacks, 13 hurries and had 19 big hits. He was a key figure in a defensive unit that allowed just 32.5 yards per game rushing.
He was a member of The Albany Herald’s 2016 All-Area Football Team. The two-sport athlete is also a track & field standout where he won Class AAAA state titles in the discus and the shot put as a junior at Monroe. He was also The Albany Herald’s track & field male athlete of the year.
247Sports.com was the first to report Leroy committing to FAU. He is rated as a three-star recruit and is ranked as the nation’s No. 64 inside linebacker and the No. 157 prospect in Georgia by 247SportsComposite.
Leroy previously held offers from LSU, Central Michigan and Troy.
National Signing Day is Wednesday.
