Falcons earn bid for just second time in franchise history

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons are heading to the Super Bowl.
The Falcons scored on their opening possession against the Green Bay Packers in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game and never looked back, rolling to a 44-21 victory.
It will be just the second appearance in the Super Bowl for the Atlanta Falcons, who made their first appearance in 1999 when they lost to the Denver Broncos. The Falcons were coached in that game by Americus native Dan Reeves.
The Falcons will await the winner of Sunday night’s AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Super Bowl LI will be played on Sunday, Feb. 5 at NRG Stadium in Houston.
While the Falcons were thrilled with the victory, it also came with a little sadness as the team played its final game in the Georgia Dome. The team will play in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium next season.
