ATHENS, Ga. — While the biggest draw for Pelham High School basketball fans on Wednesday was the school capturing its first basketball state championship in 20 years, a Lady Hornet player achieved another milestone.

Mahogany Brown, who entered the game a few points shy of reaching the 1,000-point plateau, scored 17 in the championship game and set the mark, becoming the third player this season to reach 1,000 career points.

Herald Super 6ers Destiny Thomas and Mahogany Randall accomplished the feat earlier this year.

“It feels great,” Brown said. “It was the right time.”

While Thomas and Randall were honored during home games during the season, Brown will be honored at the team’s basketball banquet.

Out of school

Wednesday was somewhat of a holiday in Pelham. Classes were canceled to give fans an opportunity to see the Lady Hornets play Telfair County in the Georgia High School Association Class A public school state championship game.

A large crowd of supporters arrived in Athens early and filled most of the seats behind the Pelham bench.

“There were probably about 50 percent faculty and staff here at the game,” Pelham City Schools Superintendent Floyd Fort said. “To use the words of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, there’s no place like home and there’s no place like Pelham. We’re grateful for all of the support throughout the school year.”

Last game

Wednesday’s game mark the final time Pelham seniors will suit up. Destiny Thomas, Mahogany Brown, Aaliyah Williams and Monica Webb played their final game against Telfair County.

This and that

Pelham coach Antonia Tookes had to get a new scorebook for Wednesday’s championship game. Basketball scorebooks only hold 30 games and Wednesday was the Lady Hornets’ 31st game of the season … Rebounding was a big deal for Pelham against Telfair. Kemp finished with 14, Thomas added 10 and Keniyah Young finished with nine. … Only three teams scored 50 or more points on Pelham this season — Lowndes (2), Valdosta and Wheeler County. Lowndes is a Class 7A school, while Valdosta is a Class 6A school.
