ALBANY — It wasn’t a mistake-free game, but it’s a win Deerfield-Windsor coach Allen Lowe will take.

The Knights beat Pinewood Christian 28-7 Friday night at Webb Memorial Stadium.

Deerfield was plagued by fumbles throughout the game but was lucky enough to recover the majority of them. They fumbled five times and recovered four of them.

The squads traded scoreless drives in the first quarter, but Deerfield drew first blood early in the second.

“I thought we actually played well,” Lowe said. “We had moments where we just didn’t take care of the football. We had some mental mistakes at points during the game, but overall it was solid win.”

Jack Kimbrel threw a deep pass to John Jacobs who got behind the defense and took it 59 yards for a touchdown. The score made it 7-0.

The Deerfield miscues started with a Garrett Jones fumble that was recovered by Pinewood. The Knights’ defense held strong after the turnover and forced the Patriots to punt.

Midway through the second after a long reception by Daniel Ramsey that put Deerfield at the 10-yard line, McCook fumbled the ball two yards outside of the end zone. Luckily for Deerfield, Shannon Moseley picked it up and carried it in for score that made it 14-0 after a Grant Wollam PAT.

Deerfield was plagued by fumbles throughout the second half as well.

Pinewood cut the score in half with two minutes left in the second quarter when Jeffrey Young found Jacob Hendrix for a 34-yard touchdown. It was the lone touchdown DWS gave up.

“I thought defensively we did a great job,” Lowe said. “We took the running game away early and made it so all they could do was throw the football. Our guys responded, we gave up one score, other than that it was a great night.”

The Patriots got the ball back just before halftime but lost it to Deerfield on the first play. The Knights were content with letting the clock run out on the half and took a 14-7 lead into the locker room.

The Deerfield offense continued to roll to open the second half. A nice run by Jones put the Knights inside the 10-yard line, where they give it to touchdown machine Cameron McCook. It took the fullback three times, but he ended up scoring on a one-yard run to make it 21-7.

In the fourth, McCook added another TD, this one from 10 yards out. It gave Deerfield a 28-7 lead.

Deerfield will play host to Bessemer (Ala.) Academy next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
