Deerfield-Windsor rally falls short, Citizens Christian takes 9-7 win
DWS scores six runs in the final inning but falls short.
ALBANY — Deerfield-Windsor nearly pulled off a dramatic rally Friday night, scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. But the comeback fell just short, as the Knights dropped a 9-7 decision to Citizens Christian Academy on Addison Field.
For the first six innings, Citizens Christian and starting pitcher Blake Bryant were in full control. The right-hander allowed just four hits and struck out eight — including striking out the side twice. The Patriots also turned a pair of double plays to keep the Knights off balance and prevent any early momentum.
Deerfield-Windsor managed only one run through six innings — an RBI single from Lane Sceals. But in the bottom of the seventh, everything changed.
Grier Morey led off with a walk, and Quinton Peterson followed with a single to right. One out later, Drake Wiggins walked to load the bases. Boyd Pollock then drew another walk to force in a run and cut the deficit to 9-2.
That’s when Gabe Daniel stepped up and launched a line drive into deep right field. The bases cleared. Suddenly, it was 9-5.
Lan Wiggins followed with an RBI single, scoring Daniel to make it 9-6. Collins Clark doubled to left to put runners on second and third, and Gage Tomlinson brought both home with a single to center. Just like that, it was 9-7.
But the Knights’ rally came to a close on a fly out and a fielder’s choice.
Clark got the start on the mound for Deerfield-Windsor. The sophomore lefty went five innings, allowing five hits and five runs — but only one was earned. He struck out seven and walked five.
Colton Marshall pitched the sixth inning, and West Rushton came on for the seventh.
The loss wraps up the regular season for Deerfield-Windsor with a 15-8-1 record. The Knights now await their seeding in the upcoming GIAA baseball playoffs, which will be announced this weekend.
