Deerfield-Windsor soccer team sweep Georgia Christian
Parker Morgan sets school record for career goals in 6-0 girls victory
By Tim Morse
ALBANY — Deerfield-Windsor’s Parker Morgan scooted her way through the Georgia Christian defense and softly kicked the ball into the back of the net.
And with 15:27 left in the second half, the pressure was finally off.
It was Morgan’s fifth goal of the game which netted her 118 in her three-year career, breaking the old record of 117 set by Casey Kincheloe from 2012-15. Morgan scored four goals in the first half to help the Lady Knights defeat Georgia Christian 6-0 Tuesday night at Darton State College.
The win also earned Deerfield-Windsor the region title, handing Georgia Christian its first region setback of the season.
DWS will open the Georgia Independent Schools Association state soccer tournament Thursday night against the Atlanta Girls School.
While most of the attention was focused on Morgan’s career night, DWS coach Alastair Joslin was happy with his team’s momentum. The Lady Knights have won 10 straight and head into the state tournament with confidence.
“This was a little bit of a boring game to tell you the truth,” Joslin said. “I thought we were a little bit lazy and we didn’t move the ball around well enough. It was like we were worried more about the reward than the risk.”
Morgan netted the first goal with 35:10 left in the first half, then another with 17:53 remaining for a commanding 2-0 advantage.
Then just a few minutes later, she netted a pair of goals in the span of 1:43 to tie Kincehloe’s mark with 10:01 left in the first half. Her performance earned her a breather.
While her teammates were pulling her to set the record, Morgan didn’t want the game to be about her.
“I didn’t want them to give up shots on goal for me,” the junior said. “That is not how we were going to be able to win.”
Morgan said she tried not to celebrate out of respect for Georgia Christian.
Rachel Bonner gave Deerfield-Windsor a 5-0 advantage with 31:50 left. Then following several attempts, Morgan made history at the school.
“I was struggling,” she said. “I had a lot of passes and I got overly excited and couldn’t keep my composure. I’m glad it’s done. Now we can keep playing like we normally do.”
The Lady Knights played without three defenders but their defense was admirable, holding Georgia Christian without a shot attempt on goal.
“I thought they were quite organized and they adjusted well for such a young group,” Joslin said. “They did a good job holding Georgia Christian scoreless.”
Rachel Sullivan added three assists, while Mattie Veilands and Leslie Soseby each added an assist.
Deerfield-Windsor boys 4, Georgia Christian 0: Deerfield-Windsor defeated Georgia Christian at Darton State College behind goals from Carson Orlowski, Joe Tondera and Reynolds Langstaff. Orlowski finished with two.
The Knights dominated after Orlowski scored the first goal with 11:36 left in the first half on a header.
About the only drama came with 4:13 left when DWS goalkeeper Brantley Talley made a big stop to preserve the shutout.
