Deerfield-Windsor stomps Terrell Academy

DAWSON — Deerfield-Windsor brought the lumber on Thursday. Or more appropriately, they brought the metal.

The Knights’ offense put on a show, scoring 18 runs in the final three innings to beat Terrell Academy 22-5 in a five-inning game at Terrell Academy.

While it was an impressive victory, Deerfield-Windsor coach Jonathan Davis knows it is still early in the year.

“We swung the bat better than we have the last couple games,” he said. “It is still such a small sample size in games. We are still really feeling our way and getting our identity this season.”

Charles Crosby opened the game with a fly to right field that got caught in the wind and carried out of the park.

The Knights were able to get multiple balls airborne and into the wind, which gave Terrell Academy trouble.

“You can’t give good baseball teams like Deerfield extra outs,” Terrell coach Ashley Walker said. “That is what we did early in the ballgame and that is what we did throughout the ballgame. When you give good teams extra outs, they are going to hit the baseball and put the pressure on the defense.”

Steven Williams went 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs. His homer in the fourth just cleared the right field fence, but it scored two runs in the six-run inning.

Deerfield scored two runs in each of the first two innings followed by a seven-run frame in the third.

The big blow in the five-run fifth came when John Logan hit a three-run homer. He finished the game 2 for 4 with five RBIs.

Crosby reached base in every at-bat and score four runs.

The Knights also received a performance from No. 9 hitter Chandler Matthews, who went 2 for 2 with three RBIs.

“That is why he is there,” Davis said. “He could probably be at the top of the order. We’ve got him down there so he could set the table for some guys at the top.”

Despite being down big, the Terrell hitters stuck around. The Eagles scored at least one run in the final three innings including a three-run fourth.

“We hit the ball fairly decent,” Walker said. “Deerfield did a good job of throwing strikes and we did a good job of matching them and hitting the baseball in big spots.”

Gabe Carlton went 2 for 2 with a single, double and a walk. He also scored two runs. Matt Britt also went 2 for 2. He had two doubles.
