ALBANY — The Dougherty Trojans easily advanced to the semifinals of the Region 1-AAAA boys basketball tournament Tuesday night with a big win over Thomas County Central, 71-26 at Dougherty High School.

Dougherty’s defense shut the Yellow Jackets down in the first quarter that led to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter. The Trojans were up 39-10 at halftime and cruised past the Yellow Jackets to move onto Friday’s semifinals at Monroe High School.

Senior Elijah West led the Trojans with 15 points and Kaleke Jinks followed with 14.

Dougherty is now 12-10 on the season and will face crosstown rival Westover (19-3) in the semifinals. No. 4-ranked Westover earned a bye in the first round by being the second-seeded team in the region behind host Monroe. Tipoff Friday night at Monroe High School will be at 6 p.m.
