ALBANY — In a performance that encapsulated her relentless spirit, Monroe’s Marianna Wright fought through exhaustion and emotion in her final high school track meet, delivering a legendary double-championship effort at Hugh Mills Stadium.
Twenty minutes after winning the state title in the 400-meter dash, Wright didn’t even have time to catch her breath before lining up for the 300-meter hurdles — the race she had dominated for four straight years without ever tasting defeat. With the stadium announcer still celebrating her first victory, Wright powered through to claim another championship, sealing her legacy in dramatic fashion.
“I made a choice to run back-to-back events in order to put my team in the best position to win,” Wright said. “Even though we came up short, I don’t regret my decision to lay it all on the line. I enjoyed the experience I gained from today on the track. Even though I was tested today, I understand that if I put my mind to it and trust in God, anything is possible.”

As Wright crossed the finish line in the 300-meter hurdles, her legs gave way, and she collapsed onto the track, her chest heaving as she fought for air. Her father and a coach rushed to her side, lifting her up as the crowd rose to its feet, applauding the exhausted champion who had given every ounce of effort on the biggest stage.

Wright’s remarkable individual achievements helped the Monroe girls secure a fifth-place finish with 47 points, just 14 points shy of state champion Monroe Area, which claimed the title with 61 points. Wright’s three races alone accounted for 28 points, highlighting her critical role in the team’s success.
Her day began with a third-place finish as a member of Monroe’s 4×200 relay team, and she closed the meet as part of the 4×400 relay team, battling fatigue after her remarkable solo performances. In June, Wright will take her talents to the University of Florida, where she will run for the Gators. She leaves behind an unmatched legacy at Monroe — a four-time state champion in the 300-meter hurdles, never once defeated in the event during her high school career.
“Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing,” Wright said. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every race, every challenge, and every person who supported me. I’m ready to take the next step and make Monroe proud at Florida.”
