The Tennessee Volunteers officially brought former Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Deangelo Gibbs, a former standout at Grayson High School, into the fold on Friday as he announced his transfer on Twitter.
“Welcome To Rocky Top,” was Tennessee’s message.
Gibbs, who appeared in six games as a freshman in 2017 and made three tackles, played seven games for Georgia as a sophomore in 2018, making seven tackles. After leaving Georgia a month ago, he has joined an SEC East rival.
“Thank you to the great fans of the University of Georgia for your unwavering love and support,” Gibbs announced Friday on his personal Twitter account. “Thank you to the coaching and support staff that do all they can to make the players the best they can be on and off the field. … From the moment I arrived in Rocky Top I was flooded with all the wonderful memories all the time I’ve spent here. With that being said, I am 100 percent committed to giving everything I have to the Vol Nation. Pleased to announce I will be attending the University of Tennessee.”
Prior to the Sugar Bowl, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said the defensive back was no longer with the team.
Multiple outlets reported that Gibbs is already enrolled at Tennessee and will play wide receiver for the Vols and head coach Jeremy Pruitt. At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, Gibbs is from Oxford, Ga., and has two years of eligibility remaining. Due to NCAA transfer rules, he likely will have to sit out a season.
Gibbs reportedly had placed his name in the transfer portal, along with Georgia safety Tray Bishop.
