GHSA, GICAA begins region tourneys this week
Regions 1-AAAA, 1-A start region play Monday night

ALBANY — Georgia High School Association basketball teams as well as schools in the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association begin postseason play this week.
Regions 1-AAAA and 1-A will begin tournaments Monday night.
A trio of Region 1-AAAA teams will play at Hardaway High School in Columbus, while the Westover girls will visit Cairo for a 6 p.m. contest. The winners advance to tournament games on Tuesday night at Shaw High in Columbus as well as Americus-Sumter High School.
After Tuesday, the semifinals and finals will be played at Carver High School in Columbus. The top four teams advance to the GHSA state basketball tournaments that begin on Feb. 17-18.
The Region 1-A tournament will begin Monday night with a trio of play-in games at Stewart County. The tournament continues on Tuesday at Stewart County and Baker County High Schools before shifting to the Cavalier Arena at the Albany State West campus.
The championship games will be played Saturday night.
In Class A, the GHSA uses power rankings to determine its playoff seedings. However, region tournament champions earn an automatic berth.
In Region 1-AAA, the tournament begins with a play-in game Tuesday night in Cordele between the fifth-seeded Worth County Lady Rams and the Crisp County Lady Cougars.
The winner advances to semifinals at Cook High School that begins on Thursday.
An intriguing matchup in the tournament will feature the third-seeded Dougherty girls against second-seeded Monroe at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
The Dougherty boys, because of a one-year postseason ban, won’t play in the tournament.
Both the Albany boys and girls will begin play in the Region 1-AA tournament Tuesday night at Early County High School. After Tuesday’s games, the semifinals and finals move to Thomasville High School to be played Thursday and Friday.
In Region 1-AAAAAA, both the Lee County boys and girls will play games Tuesday night.
In the GICAA, the Division I-AA South Tournament will be played at Central Fellowship in Macon starting Tuesday. The Sherwood Christian girls will play Calvary Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday night.
The Sherwood Christian boys earned a bye on Tuesday and will meet the Skipstone Academy/Covenant winner at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Schools who compete in the Georgia Independent Schools Association begin their region tournaments next week. They will conclude regular-season play on Friday.
