Hawks set Juneteenth as permanent team holiday

The Atlanta Hawks designated June 19 as a paid permanent company holiday, the team announced Sunday.

That date, also known as Juneteenth, recognizes the end of slavery in the United States.

In a news release, the Hawks said the “decision comes as many organizations are identifying specific ways to thoughtfully recognize and honor the full experience of African Americans in the shadow of the country’s ongoing racial tensions.”

“I am proud of the decision our organization has made to recognize Juneteenth as a company holiday this year and going forward,” said Camye Mackey, chief people, diversity and inclusion officer for the team and State Farm Arena.

“This is one of many steps we’ll take to support the positive change we need to see in society.”

On Friday, the NFL said its offices would be closed June 19 to mark the date in history.
