HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Lee County puts on show for Michigan’s Harbaugh
Also, GHSA Region 1-1A race continues to take shape
By Ron Seibel
Lee County put on a show for Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh on Friday.
Harbaugh, who already has one Lee County player on his roster in Aubrey Solomon and has current Trojans senior Otis Reese committed to the program, was in attendance Friday at Freedom Field in Warner Robins to see GHSA Class 6A No. 1 Lee County roll past Houston County 34-0 in a GHSA Region 1-6A contest.
Michigan had an off week, so the Wolverines’ coaching staff was on the recruiting trail.
Lee County (7-0, 1-0 Region 1-6A) recorded 480 yards of total offense. According to the Macon Telegraph, Lee County dominated the defensive line, holding the Bears (2-5, 0-1) to 163 yards.
Lee County quarterback Jase Orndorff had a career night, completing 19-of-25 pass attempts for 388 yards and three touchdown passes.
Orndorff’s top target, Ty Terrell, caught six passes for 136 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown early on. Jermiah Engram had two catches for 87 yards, both going for touchdowns.
“I thought we did good, we fought hard the first half,” Houston County head coach Ryan Crawford told The Telegraph. “They came out the second half with a little more intensity than we did. We have an open week which is helpful, we can get some guys healthy. A lot of guys hurt (Friday) hoping to get them healthy and back. We have to win a couple games in the region to get in the playoffs and get ready for Coffee. A week off will be great for us.”
Mitchell County, Pelham keep rolling in 1-1A
It’s looking more and more as if the Nov. 3 season finale between Pelham and Mitchell County will decide the GHSA Region 1-1A title.
Both teams remained unbeaten in region play this week, the only two remaining unbeatens in the region at 5-0.
Mitchell County rolled to a 63-22 win over Randolph-Clay on Friday, while Pelham won its second straight squeaker, 21-18 over Chattahoochee County.
Seminole County is a game-and-a-half back at 3-1 in region play.
Both Pelham and Mitchell County are off this week.
Perry overwhelms Dougherty
Perry took care of things quickly Thursday, scoring four touchdowns in the game’s first seven minutes as the Panthers rolled to a 49-8 victory over Dougherty at Hugh Mills Stadium.
Two first-quarter interceptions gave Perry (4-1) a short field for much of the first quarter.
Jay Watkins and Tyrell Owens scored the Panthers’ first two touchdowns, with Watkins catching a 31-yard touchdown pass from Lane Rucker and Owens adding a 25-yard scoring run, all by the 5:26 mark of the first quarter.
Interceptions by Jacory Burks and T.K. Harrell preceded Owens’ touchdown runs.
Dougherty’s lone score came with 1:13 to go in the first quarter, when Anphernee Jordan caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Jaylen Joyner. But the Trojans (1-5) came nowhere near scoring again.
Watkins caught a second touchdown pass from Rucker, a 10-yarder, midway through the second quarter. A 28-yard touchdown run by Owens made it 42-8 with 3:28 to go in the first half, setting up a running clock in the second half.
Jermaine Lee capped scoring for Perry with a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown with 5:05 to go in the game.
Tyler Knowles went 7-for-7 on extra points.
