DAWSON — Jamya McDaniel exploded for 32 points as the Lady Greenwave of Terrell County defeated Greene County in the first round of the GHSA Class A public state tournament.
The Lady Greenwave were without point guard Tymia Harvey who tore her ACL in the region championship game and head coach Tammye Jenkins-Ware said McDaniel took it upon herself to carry the team.
“I think she just stepped in and took it upon herself to fill in for Harvey and she just had a good game,” Jenkins-Ware said.
“We were able to execute our half court sets and we did a pretty decent job shooting free throws. That helped a lot. We were able to take advantage of some things they were doing defensively and were a little more patient on offense instead of trying to rush and take the quick baskets.”
The Lady Greenwave advance to take on Greenville, a team they defeated in the semifinals last year. They may have to do it without post player Takandris Jordan, who suffered an ankle injury Friday, making the rematch that much more difficult.
“Some of my younger players are going to have to step up,” Jenkins-Ware said. “We’re putting some pressure on them. They’re just going to have to step up and play a role and fill that spot.”
