Don Mattingly will return as manager of the Miami Marlins next season.

Michael Hill, Miami’s president of baseball operations, confirmed Thursday that Mattingly will be back for the third season of his four-year contract.

“I didn’t know a decision had to be made,” said Hill in regard to Mattingly’s status, per the Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale. “He’s under contract. Just spoke to him today, he’s doing great.”

There had been speculation that Mattingly could be replaced after the franchise was sold to a group headed by new controlling owner Bruce Sherman and former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.

The CEO of the team, Jeter did not offer a firm commitment to Mattingly last month and said he would have to make “unpopular decisions” on behalf of the new ownership group.

Mattingly guided the Marlins to a 77-85 record last season and a 79-82 mark in 2016. He previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers for five seasons, leading the club to three consecutive division titles from 2013-15.

In seven seasons, Mattingly has a career record of 602-530.
