Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona underwent a heart procedure and will not manage in next week’s All-Star Game, the team announced Friday.

Francona, 58, underwent a cardiac ablation procedure on Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic for an irregular heartbeat.

“Terry is resting comfortably at the Cleveland Clinic following the successful cardiac procedure,” the Indians said in a medical update press release on Francona. “Terry is expected to make a full recovery and will be discharged within the next day or two. It is expected he will resume managing the team beginning Friday, July 14th and Major League Baseball has been informed he will not manage the All-Star Game in Miami.”

Indians bench coach Brad Mills will manage the American League team in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game. He will be assisted by the Indians’ staff and Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash.

–Robinson Cano’s brief period as an All-Star snub came to an end. The Seattle Mariners’ second baseman was one of six players added to the American League squad for Tuesday’s game in Miami. Cano replaces Starlin Castro of the New York Yankees, who pulled out with a hamstring injury.

Also added to the AL squad were Detroit Tigers outfielder Justin Upton, Tampa Bay right-handed starter Chris Archer and three right-handed relievers — Houston’s Chris Devenski, Minnesota’s Brandon Kintzler and Toronto’s Roberto Osuna.

Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed starter Alex Wood was named to replace teammate Clayton Kershaw on the National League team. Kershaw is starting Sunday’s game and is ineligible to participate on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Wood is 10-0 with a 1.67 ERA.

Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish, Detroit Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer and Cleveland Indians right-hander Corey Kluber were removed from the AL team due to their scheduled Sunday starts. Also replaced were Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout (thumb) and Houston Astros left-hander Dallas Keuchel (neck).

–The Minnesota Twins placed Joe Mauer on the 10-day disabled list.

Mauer has missed the past two games and was diagnosed with a lumbar strain in his lower back. The move was made retroactive to Wednesday.

With the All-Star break upcoming, the club is hopeful Mauer will be ready to return when play resumes.

The six-time All-Star is batting .286 with five homers and 34 RBIs this season.

–The Toronto Blue Jays activated right-hander Aaron Sanchez from the 10-day disabled list prior to his start against the Houston Astros.

It will be Sanchez’s first start since May 19 against the Baltimore Orioles. The right-hander, who went 15-2 and made the American League All-Star team last season, has been plagued by a blister on his middle finger.

Sanchez is 0-1 with a 3.33 ERA in five starts this season.

Right-handed reliever Dominic Leone was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo to make room for Sanchez. Leone is 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA in 34 appearances with Toronto this season, allowing 28 hits and striking out 42 in 39 2/3 innings.

–The Washington Nationals placed Michael A. Taylor on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique strain and activated fellow outfielder Chris Heisey.

Taylor was removed from Thursday’s series-opening 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves after grounding out in the third inning. Rookie Brian Goodwin moved from left field to center, and Ryan Raburn took over in left for the Nationals in the top of the fourth.

Heisey has been sidelined since May 24 with a ruptured right biceps. The 32-year-old is hitting .128 with one homer and three RBIs in 28 games this season.
