ALBANY — The Monroe girls flew to an easy victory Friday night in the Westover Relays at Hugh Mills Stadium.

The Lady Tornadoes took first place with 137 points, while Warner Robins took second with 120 1/2 and the Westover girls finished third.

On the boys side, the Monroe boys came in second with 119 points. Lowndes finished with 186 points to take top honors, Westover came in third with 64 points.

By the time of the final event — the 4×400-meter relay, the Monroe girls already had a 15-point lead.

They handily won that event because the team had built a lengthy lead by the time they handed the baton to anchor Jahari Williams.

“I have confidence in myself,” Williams said. “I don’t like losing, but if I do lose it will tell me what I have to work on.”

Williams came in first in the long jump and also came in second in both the 200- and 100-meter dash.

Monroe coach Billy Glanton was happy with his team’s performance but acknowledged they weren’t completely healthy.

“We had a couple of girls get banged up,” Monroe coach Billy Glanton said. “We’ve got to get them well before the region meet. That is not long.”

Despite the strong performance from both teams, Glanton would like to make a couple of changes before the region meet.

“We need to fine-tune our relays,” he said. “We got to get some quality points in every event. That is what we are trying to focus on right now.”

The Monroe boys finished in first in the 1600 sprint medley and the 4×400-meter relay. Glanton said his team has not peaked yet which is a good thing.

“We are close,” he said. “We really want to peak at the state meet. We are close, but we aren’t quite there.”

The Westover girls received a strong performance from Bryshea Jackson. She finished first in the triple jump and third in both the high jump and long jump.
