Monroe’s David Dillard enjoys big night against Jordan
Senior runs for three touchdowns, passes for two more in Tornadoes’ romp over Jordan

ALBANY — David Dillard is known as someone who can throw and run with equal ability.
Monroe’s senior quarterback had the chance to prove that Friday, accounting for five touchdowns as the Tornadoes opened the 2018 high school football season with a 47-14 win over Jordan at Hugh Mills Stadium.
“He had a big game,” said Monroe’s Lorranger Russell, who opened the game with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. “We needed that.”
Dillard, a senior and Albany Herald Dynamite Dozen selection, had touchdown runs of 23, 1 and 20 yards. He also had a 28-yard touchdown pass to Tyrele Scott (four catches, 98 yards) in the first quarter and a 23-yard scoring pass to Desmond Ansley (three catches, 56 yards) in the second half.
The numbers for Dillard: 9-of-15 passing for 210 yards to go along with 113 yards on 11 carries. He also scored five points on conversions, scoring a 2-pointer and kicking three more.
“He made good checks for us,” Monroe head coach Charles Truitt said. “That’s what we count on him to do every night, to put us in position to make plays. He did that (Friday). He’s a true quarterback for us.”
Monroe, which won its fourth straight season opener, had a big start with Russell’s touchdown off the opening kickoff.
Jordan, however, took the lead 20 second after Russell’s touchdown with a 57-yard pass play, one of two big plays the Monroe defense gave up Friday. But the Tornadoes’ defense also came up with a pair of fumble recoveries in Jordan territory, setting up two of Monroe’s touchdowns.
Three of Monroe’s touchdowns came in the second quarter, turning what was a five-point game after 12 minutes into a comfortable 33-7 margin at the break.
“Our defense set us up,” Dillard said. “They gave us good chances to score the ball, to get the ball down into the end zone.”
Robert Doctrie scored a rushing touchdown for Monroe, finishing with 66 yards on 10 carries.
The Tornadoes host Terrell County at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Week 2 action.
