Bulls waive G Rondo after one season

The Chicago Bulls waived Rajon Rondo on Friday, ending the point guard’s stint with the team after one season.

Rondo had a team option worth nearly $13.4 million that would have become fully guaranteed if Chicago hadn’t waived him by Friday. He will instead receive $3 million by being released.

The Bulls also waived reserve guard Isaiah Canaan.

Rondo averaged 7.8 points and 6.7 assists in 69 games for the Bulls. He started just 42 contests as he was benched for a time by coach Fred Hoiberg in December and didn’t return to the starting lineup until late in the season.

Rondo, 31, will be playing for his fifth organization in the past four seasons. He was a four-time All-Star during 8 1/2 seasons with the Boston Celtics but hasn’t come close to his previous form in stints with the Dallas Mavericks (46 games), Sacramento Kings (one season) and the Bulls.

Canaan averaged 4.6 points in 39 games for the Bulls. He has an 8.4 career average in four seasons with the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers and the Bulls.

Jazz on verge of landing Rubio from Timberwolves

The Utah Jazz have agreed to acquire point guard Ricky Rubio from the Minnesota Timberwolves for a first-round pick in the 2018 draft, multiple outlets reported on Friday.

The two teams reportedly have been in trade talks for over two weeks. The pick is top-14 protected.

The Jazz will welcome Rubio into their open salary space of $16 million before Saturday as a means to find a potential replacement for George Hill, who enters free agency as one of the top point guards on the market.

Rubio has two years left on his contract. He’s owed $14.25 million in 2017-18 and $14.95 million in 2018-19.

Rubio averaged 11.1 points. 9.1 assists and 4.1 rebounds in 75 games last season. The 26-year-old has averaged 10.3 points and 8.5 assists during his six seasons with the Timberwolves since being selected with the fifth overall pick of the 2009 draft.

The pass-first Rubio is just a 37.5-percent shooter during his career. He shot a career-best 40.2 percent in 2016-17.

The expectant departure of Rubio leaves just Tyus Jones as Minnesota’s lone point guard on the roster.

76ers release G Henderson

The Philadelphia 76ers waived guard Gerald Henderson, the team announced Friday.

Henderson averaged 9.2 points and 2.6 rebounds in his only season with the 76ers. The 29-year-old was due to make $9 million if he wasn’t waived prior to the deadline on Friday.

“We want to thank Gerald for being the consummate pro that he is and for adding so much to our growing basketball program and culture,” 76ers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo said. “Gerald’s professionalism, leadership and basketball contributions were a big part of our organization’s development this past year.”

Henderson recorded career averages of 11.2 points and 3.2 rebounds with Philadelphia, Portland and Charlotte since being selected with the 12th overall pick of the 2009 draft.
