CAMILLA — The Pelham Hornets dominated Baconton Charter Friday night with six consecutive touchdowns in the first half and claimed a 40-0 victory at Centennial Field.
The Blazers (1-1, 0-1 Region 1-A) gave up three fumbles to help Pelham (2-0, 1-0) dominate the game. One of them was returned for a touchdown by senior wide receiver Cassius Allen. Junior running back Kobe Russell rushed for 95 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns and freshman quarterback Kendrick Patterson completed 11 of 14 passes for 164 yards to lead the Hornet offense.
Pelham took the opening drive 71 yards on eight plays, including a holding penalty that nullified a pass play from Patterson to Allen down to the 20-yard line.
The Blazers followed with one play before the Hornets recovered a fumble on the second play at the 38. After three runs by Russell, the Hornets were at the 20-yard line and then junior Judah Wilson took the ball down to the one. Sophomore fullback Javoris Williams pushed the ball into the end zone on the next play.
A few plays later, the Hornets recovered another Blazer fumble and took over at the 43-yard line. Four plays later, Russell scored from 14 yards away, his second touchdown of the night.
On the first play of the second quarter, Javoris Williams scored his second touchdown of the game with another short push. The extra points put the Hornets up 26-0 but seconds later, Allen scored after picking up a Baconton fumble and carrying it into the end zone to put the Hornets ahead 33-0 after the extra point.
Allen scored again for the Hornets with a 26-yard pass from Patterson. The extra point ended the scoring.
The second half was played under a running clock.
Neither team was able to muster a score though the Blazers moved deep inside Hornet territory twice behind the running of junior fullback Max Deen and some quick runs from freshman Caleb Jones.
The Hornets will host their first home game of the year Friday night at the Hornet’s Nest against Region 1-A opponent Terrell County. The Blazers (1-1) will also host a Region 1-A game Friday in Camilla at Centennial against Chattahoochee County.
