Southland boys, SGA girls win region track titles; Sherwood boys take third, girls fourth

ALBANY — The Southland Academy boys and the Southwest Georgia Academy girls claimed team titles Wednesday at the region track and field championships held at Hugh Mills Stadium.

Southland’s boys earned the championship behind multiple standout performances. Ashton Ray won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, while Jamarcus Walker swept the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. The Raiders also won the 400-meter relay and took the top two spots in the 1600-meter relay. Bryant Roland and Davis Daniel finished first and second, respectively, in the boys’ triple jump, and Max Stansell claimed the title in the 400-meter dash.

Sherwood Christian’s boys placed third overall, led by wins from Tripp Roberts in the high jump and the 3200-meter relay team. Wesley Brooks, JP Cannon, Luke Bengrab, and Christian Jackson — who ran a strong anchor leg — powered the Eagles to the relay win.

On the girls’ side, Southwest Georgia Academy won the team title with 151 points. Though the Lady Warriors won only two events — the 3200-meter run by Marigrace Garcia-Simmons and the 3200-meter relay — they built their championship effort by scoring in nearly every event throughout the meet.

Sherwood Christian’s girls finished fourth, led by a strong day from Kaylee Hatcher, who won the 1600-meter run and the 300-meter hurdles. Allie Hemmings added a win in the 100-meter hurdles.
