Valdosta runs past Dougherty, 14-3

ALBANY — Dougherty never recovered from Valdosta’s explosive first inning Tuesday afternoon.

The Wildcats scored eight runs in the opening frame and went on to hand the Lady Trojans a 14-3 loss in the season opener.

Valdosta sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning, using four hits, three run-scoring ground balls and an error to build an 8-0 advantage.

Jesselyn Johnson delivered a two-run single to highlight the rally, while Ainsley Lopez added a two-run hit later in the inning.

The Wildcats added four more runs in the second, taking advantage of three Dougherty errors to stretch the lead to 12-0.

Despite the early deficit, the Lady Trojans continued to battle at the plate.

Dariona Simmons drove in a run and finished 1-for-3 to lead Dougherty offensively, while Jalexi Thomas reached base twice on walks as the Lady Trojans drew eight free passes.

Dougherty also showed aggressiveness on the bases, stealing seven bases. Alona Harris and Deriyah Gibbs each swiped multiple bags.

Harris took the loss in the circle after pitching two innings. Although Valdosta scored 12 runs while she was in the game, only one was earned as the Wildcats capitalized on several Dougherty defensive miscues.

Jayla Santoro-Halyard earned the win for Valdosta, allowing one hit and three runs — two earned — over four innings while striking out five.

Valdosta also put pressure on Dougherty throughout the game, stealing 13 bases while drawing six walks.

The Lady Trojans will look to bounce back in their next contest as they continue the opening week of the season.
