Westover’s offensive line honored as ‘Offensive Line of the Week’ by Georgia High School Football Daily

ALBANY — The Westover football offensive line was honored with a plaque and t-shirts Wednesday for being named the “Offensive Line of the Week” by the Georgia High School Football Daily.

Jeff Gable of the Georgia HIgh School Football Daily met with Westover Head Coach Corey Joyner and the offensive line players in Westover’s media center to explain the process of selection and present the award.

“We go through all of the high school football games in Georgia – more than 400 high schools,” Gable said. “The award is based on the team’s success against a quality opponent, yardage, and other things. Westover put up more than 300 yards rushing against Cairo, one of the top ten teams in the state, and won 29-10. Only one team is selected each week of the high school football season, so out of 400 teams, Westover was the best.”

Westover’s offensive line includes University of Pittsburgh commit Torian Chester, top-100 sophomore prospect Kyson Mallard, Montavious Jones, J’Shawn Jinks, Tanner Turner, Corey Gardner, Corey Porter, Emory Clarke, and Vincent Tumbling. The line is coached by Cleatus Hopkins, Chad Pope, and Raymond Thomas.

Westover’s win last Friday at Hugh Mills Stadium was its first over Cairo since 2013. It secured the number two spot in Region 1-AAA and home field advantage in the first round of the state playoffs. Behind the offensive line, Westover running back Dominique Ball ran for 302 yards against the Syrupmakers.

Representatives from Alfa Insurance were also on hand because Alfa sponsors the award.

The Patriots completed the regular season with a 9-1 record and will not know who they play next week until after Friday night’s make-up games.
