Four-sport standout signs baseball scholarship

CAMILLA — Collier Baggett plays football, basketball, baseball and runs track & field for the Westwood School. Getting him to slow down to sign a letter-of-intent to play college baseball at Augusta was a challenge Monday morning.
The four-sport standout made it official, signing with the Jaguars.
“It was always a dream of mine to play college baseball,” Baggett said. “So, getting to sign a letter-of-intent is exciting. I thank God, my coaches and my family for allowing me to continue my playing career at the next level.”
Baggett has been named all-region in the Georgia Independent Schools Association Region 3-AAA in every sport. In addition, he has been named to all-state track & field team as well as the baseball team. He scored more than 1,000 points in his basketball career.
But his first love is baseball, and Baggett couldn’t have been happier to sign with Augusta.
“I like football and basketball a lot too,” he said. “But I feel like I’m better at playing baseball than anything else.”
The pitching standout has the Wildcats in the thick of the region playoff chase.
Westwood baseball coach Jay Flynt, in his first season, has coached in college and knows what it takes to be successful. He has witnessed the type of athlete Augusta will be getting.
“He could have signed a scholarship to play small college football and basketball,” Flynt said. “But I know baseball is his first love. He’s never done baseball year round with the conditioning and weightlifting, so I’m very excited to see what happens.”
Augusta is currently the top team in the Peach Belt Conference standings and have won eight in a row. They will play Columbus State in a key series this weekend. Baggett said he plans to attend.
“They have a lot of good players and a lot of good athletes,” he said. “It’s pretty exciting to be going to a successful baseball school.”
