A battle from start to finish and the Lady Greenwave fell four points short.
METTER — The Terrell County Lady Greenwave’s strong season came to a close Tuesday night after a hard-fought battle in the Class A Division II Elite Eight.
Metter held off Terrell County 50-46 in a tightly contested game that swung back and forth throughout the night, ending the Greenwave’s playoff run and finishing their season at 24-5.
Terrell County struck first. Britney Hill and Ceailaja Samuel scored the game’s opening baskets to give the Greenwave an early lead, but Metter answered quickly with a 15-4 run to close the first quarter and take a 15-8 advantage.
The Greenwave regrouped in the second quarter and battled their way back. Khloe Brown’s two free throws tied the game at 21-21, and moments later Jada Rushing drilled a three-pointer to put Terrell County ahead 24-21. The Greenwave carried that momentum into halftime, holding a 25-21 lead at the break.
Terrell County continued its strong play after halftime. When Hill knocked down a jump shot midway through the third quarter, the Greenwave extended their lead to 32-25 — their largest advantage of the night.
But Metter refused to go away.
The Lady Tigers slowly chipped away at the deficit and trimmed the margin to 36-32 entering the fourth quarter. In the final period, Metter’s Keymara Johnson delivered the biggest shots of the night, knocking down two three-pointers that pushed the Lady Tigers in front 40-38.
Terrell County kept fighting. Samuel tied the game for the final time at 45-45, but Metter answered with a basket on its next possession to take the lead for good. The Lady Tigers then sealed the win at the free-throw line as the Greenwave fouled in the closing seconds in an attempt to regain possession.
Rushing led Terrell County with 17 points, while Hill added 12 and Samuel finished with 10. Chassidy Franklin chipped in eight points for the Greenwave.
Despite the loss, Terrell County completed an impressive season under head coach Tammye Jenkins-Ware. The Greenwave captured the region championship and finished with a 24-5 record while advancing deep into the state playoffs.
The narrow defeat ended the Greenwave’s postseason run, but not a season that produced another strong chapter for the program.
