ALBANY — Two games into the season and the Albany State Lady Rams are searching for answers for their offensive woes.
So far, the Lady Rams are shooting 38.4 percent from the field, 14.2 percent from 3-point range and 40 percent from the free throw line. Head coach Robert Skinner said the numbers are disappointing, but not entirely surprising.
“I expect it to be this way when you don’t put the time in in the preseason to shoot the basketball,” he said. “I don’t believe my team did what they were supposed to do as far as becoming better shooters in the offseason. They worked hard and conditioned well. Strength wise, we’re in pretty good shape, but as far as the fundamentals and knowing what to do and when to do it, I don’t think we spent much time doing that and it showed over the weekend.”
Senior point guard Mecca Frost believes it’s about working out the early season kinks.
“We’re not getting into our posts, we’re hesitating on our shots, executing our plays,” she said. “Other than that, I don’t see a problem. We’re a great offensive team as well as a defensive team, so once we get into the rhythm of things, we should be fine.”
She said her squad has what it takes to get back on track, they just have to put their collective nose to the grindstone and use this past weekend as a teachable moment.
“Keep faith this season,” she said. “Like you said, we’re just two games in. That can make or break a team. You go out there and you’re losing, losing, losing, you can either keep your head down for the rest of the season or pick it up and learn from these two games and with the team we have, we definitely plan on learning from these two games and going to work.”
All improvements will have to be made on the fly as they head to Florida today to take on Florida Institute of Technology. They won’t play again at home until next month.
ALBANY TECH READY TO GO: After a two-week break, the Albany Tech Titans are ready to try and extend their seven-game win streak this week as they take on Georgia Perimeter at Albany State’s HPER Gym Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Titans have also been out of action for about two weeks as well after last week’s matchup against Faith Christian Academy was cancelled. They also take on Georgia Perimeter at ASU Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
