ALBANY — After a season opening loss to North Florida Christian Academy, the Deerfield-Windsor baseball team has since bounced back with back-to-back wins.

The Knights earned their second victory of the season on Friday night, beating Brookwood 12-1 in five innings at home. It was Deerfield’s second win in as many nights. They beat Westfield 11-7 on Thursday night.

Like any other team, Deerfield is still working through some early season problems, but Friday was their most complete game yet.

“We did a little bit better throwing strikes,” Deerfield coach Jonathan Davis said. “This week we haven’t done that well. Cut our walks in half so that is a positive that we will take from it.”

The win makes Deerfield 2-1 on the young season. The Knights go on the road for a doubleheader today against Alabama schools Lee-Scott Academy and Bessemer City High School.

Deerfield opened the game against Brookwood with a four-run first inning. The Knights showed patience drawing two walks, but the big blow came off the bat of Bryce Northrop. The designated hitter delivered a two-out, three-run home run to dead center field.

“He just threw a fastball down the middle,” Northrop said. “I sat on it and hit it pretty solid. It’s exciting to get one this early. It builds a lot of confidence.”

The Knights continued to rough up Brookwood’s starting pitcher with three more runs in the second inning. Baylin Moore hit a two-run triple to make the score 7-0.

The Deerfield offense continued to put in work in the third inning. After scoring two runs on wild pitches, Steven Williams blasted a bomb over the rightfield fence to make it 11-0. Williams went 1 for 3 and scored two runs. The first three hitters in the Knights lineup score two runs each.

“We have had some decent at-bats,” Davis said. “We are still not great on the bases. We are really bad on the bases so we are kind of negating a lot of our good at-bats. It is the first week so we are trying to workout the kinks still.”

Deerfield starting pitcher Tanner Ford allowed just one hit through the first three innings. He ran into trouble in the fourth when he gave up Brookwood’s lone run. Ford pitched four innings and struck out seven.

Charles Crosby pitched the final inning and struck out two.
