BURT JONES: Lieutenant governor lauds passage of work force bills

Lt. Gov. Burt Jones issued a statement on the passage of four bills that promote work force development and enable more Georgians to become prepared to enter the work force.
“One of the biggest inhibitors of business development in our state has been the shortage of labor,” Jones said. “We understand that we cannot import labor, and we must do everything we can to develop a willing and able work force to meet the labor needs of our business community right here in Georgia. A key piece of this is helping to enhance HBCUs’ work force and economic efforts. This legislative initiative is a priority of mine so that we can empower Georgia businesses and keep Georgia the No. 1 state in which to do business.”
Senate Bill 253 – Creates the HBCU Innovation and Economic Prosperity Planning Districts Commission. Sponsored by Senator Sonya Halpern, D-Atlanta.
Senate Bill 384 – Provides for the development and administration of the State of Georgia as Model Employer Program to increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Sponsored by Billy Hickman, R-Statesboro.
Senate Bill 399 – Encourages the Commissioner of the Technical College System and the Chancellor of the University System to coordinate efforts to expand transfer opportunities between the two systems. Sponsored by Senator Shelly Echols, R-Gainesville.
Senate Bill 440 – Creates the Accelerated Career Diploma Program to establish accelerated career education grants for participating students. Sponsored by Matt Brass, R-Newnan.
