GSW men ousted in Peach Belt quarterfinals
The Georgia Southwestern men’s basketball season came to a close Wednesday evening with a 70-54 loss in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference tournament at UNC Pembroke.
The 24th-ranked Braves, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, improved to 15-1 this season at home and 24-5 overall. GSW finishes 13-14 overall, a six-win improvement for second-year head coach Ben Hicks.
Hasaan Buggs, the lone senior on GSW’s roster, led all scorers with 18 points and added five rebounds and four assists. R.J. Sessions scored 14 points, and Andre Statam added 10.
South Georgia Tech men enter postseason with win
The South Georgia Tech men’s basketball team put together a 100-82 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association victory Wednesday over Gordon State to finish the regular season with an 18-11 overall record and an 11-5 conference performance.
The win gives the Jets the No. 4 seed for next week’s NJCAA Region XVII tournament. They will host a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Americus.
Five South Georgia Tech players scored in double-figures against Gordon State. Sophomore forward Marquel Wiggins led the team in scoring with 21 points, sophomore guard Mike Boone added 17, and freshman guard Isaac LeCompte accounted for 16 points. Freshman forward Adonis Green scored 15 points, and sophomore guard Rico Simmons closed out the double-digit scoring with 12 points.
South Georgia Tech hosts GCAA women’s tourney
South Georgia Tech is hosting the semifinals and championship game of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball tournament Friday and Saturday in Americus.
The top-seeded Jets take on East Georgia State, a 68-44 quarterfinal winner over Albany Tech, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Central Georgia Tech and Georgia Highlands meet in the 5:30 p.m. semifinal.
The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday. The winner faces the NJCAA District 10 champion for a spot in the NJCAA national tournament.
Jackson to hold book signing
Former Florida State and New York Jets cornerback Bobby Jackson will hold a book signing from 4-7 p.m. on March 15 at the Merry Acres Inn pool house.
Jackson, an Albany native who played for the Jets from 1978-85, has teamed with Bill Lightle to write an autobiography, “Straight out of CME.”
Merry Acres Inn is located at 1500 Dawson Road.
