Albany Police Department upgrades charges to murder after assault victim dies

ALBANY – An Albany man now faces murder charges after his victim in an Aug. 10 assault on South Jefferson Street later died.

An off-duty police officer found Melissa Law unconscious in the 900 block of South Jefferson Street, and police later determined that she had been sexually assaulted during the attack, according to the Albany Police Department. She was removed from life support on Aug. 18, police said.

Johnnie Jones, 61, was identified as a suspect and was later arrested.

Jones is now charged with murder, aggravated assault, aggravated sodomy, aggravated rape, aggravated stalking and aggravated battery.

He is being held in the Dougherty County Jail.
