Former Dougherty High School star and Albany native Kam Davis turned in the best rushing performance of his college career Friday night, running for 147 yards and two touchdowns as Liberty rolled past Delaware 30-14 in its Conference USA opener in Newark, Delaware.
Davis surpassed 100 yards for the second consecutive game and provided the biggest play of the night for a Liberty offense that piled up a season-high 282 rushing yards.
The former Trojan broke loose midway through the second quarter, finding a hole on the right side and racing 56 yards for a touchdown that extended Liberty’s lead to 13-0.
Davis wasn’t finished.
He capped his career night with a 5-yard touchdown run with 11:19 remaining, giving the Flames a commanding 30-0 advantage before Delaware scored twice late.
Liberty scored 30 unanswered points to win its fourth consecutive game and improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in Conference USA. Delaware fell to 2-3 and 0-1.
The Flames finished with 446 yards of offense, including 282 on the ground while averaging 6 yards per carry. Quarterback Deshawn Purdie completed 13 of 20 passes for 157 yards, and Makai Jackson caught five passes for 90 yards.
Liberty led 6-0 after a pair of Chase Reeves field goals before Davis’ 56-yard burst produced the game’s first touchdown. Peyton Jones added a 3-yard scoring run with 38 seconds remaining in the second quarter to send the Flames into halftime leading 20-0.
Reeves added a third field goal in the third quarter before Davis’ second touchdown put the game away.
The victory gave Liberty its first four-game winning streak since opening the 2024 season with five straight victories.
Davis and the Flames return home Thursday to face Sam Houston at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
