EDISON – The No. 3-ranked Calhoun County Cougars extended their perfect start to the season with a pair of impressive wins over the weekend, defeating No. 5 Mitchell County 68-44 on Friday night and edging Early County 64-58 on Saturday. The two victories improve the Cougars’ record to 6-0 and reinforce their status as Region 1-A contenders.

Friday’s game against Mitchell County saw the Cougars overcome a third-quarter scare to secure a dominant win at Calhoun County High School. Senior Zechariah Canidate helped spark the Cougars in the third quarter with six straight points, including a fast-break slam dunk that prompted Mitchell County Head Coach Antonio Haynes to call a timeout. The Eagles rallied to close the gap to 40-36, but Calhoun County Head Coach Marcus Shaw’s timeout shifted the momentum. The Cougars responded with an 18-0 run, capped by a Zion Suber dunk and back-to-back three-pointers from Kenari Harris, to take control and seal the win.

“We were kind of sloppy tonight,” Shaw said after the game. “But that’s to be expected early in the season. Overall, our kids did a good job of maintaining their composure when things didn’t go as planned. We just want to continue growing and improving game by game.”

Senior post player Amajion Figgins dominated inside for the Cougars, finishing with 20 points, several blocks, and numerous rebounds. Harris added 14 points, and Canidate contributed 11. Mitchell County’s Willie Pollard led his team with 10 points, while Antwan Edmonds added nine.

On Saturday, the Cougars faced a stiffer test in a tight game against Early County. Calhoun County leaned on big performances from Darnell Enocher, who led all scorers with 24 points, and Zion Suber, who added 20. The Cougars made clutch plays down the stretch to hold off Early County’s late push. Nate Tinson paced Early County with 15 points.

The Cougars weren’t the only ones celebrating over the weekend, as the Calhoun County Lady Cougars also earned a 57-43 win over Mitchell County on Friday. Treasure Hollinger led the way with 22 points, scoring three consecutive baskets in the third quarter to give her team a 31-21 cushion. The Lady Eagles rallied to trim the lead to 35-29, but Calhoun County’s defense tightened, and Emory Jackson’s key sequence—a corner three followed by a steal and layup—helped seal the victory.

Kambria Logan added 12 points for the Lady Cougars, while Deztani Jackson scored nine. Sariyah Chester led Mitchell County with 14 points.
