ALBANY — That loud noise you hear out U.S. Highway 19 every weekend now is the roar of engines as drivers compete in racing at the U.S. 19 Dragway.
Rhonda Bethea, a Real Estate investor from Albany, knew very little about drag racing when she and her partners were approached about buying the raceway. But Bethea did her homework, found herself looking at a viable business, and took the plunge. The new owners took over operations in October of last year, and racers have been making the weekend trip to the dragway since.
“We’re proud to provide jobs for the area and employ local vendors (from exterminator to lawn care and beyond) and a place for racers from all over Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Alabama to compete,” Bethea said. “We plan to have something out here every weekend so check our website (US19-dragway.com) regularly.”
The dragway also has a newly built stage for events and concerts.

Except for a brief period, Albany Herald Editor Carlton Fletcher has been a newspaperman, working as Sports Writer/Columnist for the weekly Ocilla Star, as Sports Writer/Sports Editor with The Tifton Gazette, and as Sports Writer/Copy Editor/News Reporter/Features Editor and Editor of the paper. He has won numerous awards for sports, news, business and column writing, including a first-place Business Writing award in last year’s Georgia Press Association awards competition.
The annual juried exhibition, one of the region’s largest showcases of visual art, features approximately 46 artists and nearly 90 works spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography and mixed media.
From the street, strands of purple ribbon wind around the white columns of the historic theater, hinting at the story waiting beyond its doors. Inside the foyer, a carefully curated slideshow flickers across a large screen, cycling through the faces of the cast. Some are seasoned performers. Others are stepping onto a stage for the very first time. Teachers stand alongside former students. Parents perform beside their children. People who worship in different churches, work different jobs and come from different corners of Southwest Georgia gather beneath the same lights to tell the same story.
Now in its 26th year, the exhibition features work by artists from across Southwest Georgia and offers residents an opportunity to engage directly with the area’s creative community.
