ALBANY — While the curtain is about to go up on Theatre Albany’s holiday musical production “Harry Connick Jr.’s The Happy Elf,” auditions will be conducted Sunday and Monday evenings for the first play of 2018.
With Mark Costello, who has been artistic director for the theater for 34 years, retiring at the end of the month, the theater will use guest directors to finish out the season. Long-time Theatre Albany performer Doug Lorber will be at the helm for the February show, “Dancing Lessons.”
The production has two stage roles — a male and a female. Auditions are set for 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Theatre Albany, 514 Pine Ave.
In the play, written by Mark St. Germain, a painfully shy young man named Ever is seeking dancing instruction from out-of-work Broadway dancer Senga, who’s attempting to recover from a career-threatening injury. Ever is hoping to develop enough dancing skills not to embarrass himself at an awards dinner.
In the process, the two make unexpected discoveries about each other that are sometimes hilarious and other times heartwarming.
Lorber is looking to cast one male and one female, both in their 20s to 30s. Auditions will consist of readings from the script.
Performances of “Dancing Lessons” are scheduled for Feb. 9-11 and 15-18.
