SYLVESTER — Jesse Paulk, author of several local family histories, presented a collection of books to the Worth County Library on Friday. The books contain marriage and cemetery records and will be filed in the local genealogy section of the library.

Paulk is the author of more than 100 family histories. He has conducted extensive research on prominent Worth County families: the Hobby, Sumter and Young families. On Friday, he hosted a book show and sale in the Genealogy Room at the Worth County Library.

Mary King Givens attended the book show and library donation. She said the books are a welcome addition to the Worth County Library’s growing collection of local history books.

“Studies show genealogy to be the No. 1 hobby in many parts of the country,” Givens said. “Interest in family histories has grown immensely in the past five years. It is nice to have a repository here for local family history and other documentation.”

Worth librarian Leigh Wiley said the books will be of interest to many families who reside in the area as well as to visitors. Wiley and Givens said genealogy is now closely tied to tourism and to economic development, and collections, like those donated by Paulk, are bringing researchers, historians and extended family members to libraries and genealogy centers throughout and beyond Southwest Georgia.
