ALBANY — Students will receive awards for their artistic interpretation of Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “Dream Speech” during a Children of the Dream ceremony Wednesday.

The Children of the Dream awards ceremony and art exhibit is an annual event sponsored by Renaissance Connection Inc., the 2017 Albany King Day Celebration Committee and the Dougherty County School System.

Forty students submitted works of art to this year’s competition. The competition was open to students from middle and high schools in Dougherty County.

The theme for 2017 is “The Color of Unity.” Students were asked to depict what “unity” means to them and how important diversity is.

The awards ceremony will be held in the Thronateeska Heritage Center’s Chautauqua Room at 6 p.m.

Students will be able to place in two categories. Awards will include first-, second- and third-place awards, as well as Best in Show and Rising Star. The Children of the Dream exhibit will be on display at the Thronateeska Science Museum after the ceremony and then will travel to the Albany Civil Rights Institute and the Albany Mall.

Renaissance Connection is an arts and cultural nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting creativity through all forms of art for the educational advancement of the community. This is the fourth year that Renaissance Connection has taken on the task of organizing the Children of the Dream show and competition.
