Classic autos draw attention Saturday in Albany
Visitors to a home improvement store get a sneak peek at an upcoming auto show

ALBANY — Visitors to an Albany home improvement store today were surprised that they were getting an advance glimpse at some of the cars that may be at the Artesian City Car Club’s 44th annual Open Car, Truck and Street Rod Show, set for next Saturday at the Albany Mall.
A section of Home Depot’s parking lot off North Westover Boulevard was cordoned off for the vehicles today. Charles Proctor said the threat of rain kept some of the club members from bringing out their prized possessions, but there were about two dozen vehicles ranging from classics and muscle cars to future classics on the lot.
Today’s display was in many ways a sneak peek at the annual show. Cars on display included a 1969 Chevelle Super Sport, a 1957 Chevy, a 1965 Mustang, a pair of vintage El Caminos — one restored, the other unretouched — a GTO and others, including Jeeps that are newer to the club.
Proctor said the coming show is attracting stronger than normal early interest from participants. He said the show, which awards prizes in a number of categories, usually brings in 100 or more cars and trucks, but early indications are this year will see more.
“Club membership is way up,” he said. “People that organize our show say that normally only 10 or 12 people sign up beforehand because of the uncertainty of the weather in this area, but this year he’s got 30 people already signed up, which is a record for him. So he said to be expecting a big show this year.”
Wednesday’s SouthView will have a preview of the show.
The Artesian City Car Club will have it monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Newman’s Bar & Grill, 2807 Meredyth Drive.
