ALBANY — The Presidential Leadership Scholars program, a leadership development initiative drawing upon the resources of the presidential centers of Lyndon B. Johnson, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, has an Albany native in its ranks.

Dr. Carlos Williams, Albany State University graduate and commander in the U.S. Navy, was among 60 scholars invited to participate in the program’s inaugural class from more than 900 applicants.

The program began Feb. 24 at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Over the course of several months, scholars will travel to each participating presidential center to learn from former presidents, key administration officials and leading academics. They are being tasked with studying and putting into practice varying approaches to leadership, developing a network of peers and exchanging ideas with mentors and others who can help them make an impact in their communities, officials from the organization said.

Scholars are visiting the four centers before graduation at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas in July. Sessions will focus on a specific core component of leadership and include a case study illustrative of the competencies of that president. The curriculum draws from presidential center archives and other resources related to moments from each administration, and provides insight into how each president addressed pressing challenges. The curriculum also relies upon analyses of how leaders across all sectors address similar types of challenges, officials from Presidential Leadership Scholars said.
