BILL BATES: Clarification needed on school sign

BILL BATES

It was nice to read in the dec. 20 issue of The Albany Herald of Albany Middle School’s exiting from the Georgia Department of Education’s underperforming school list. Compliments to the principal and staff are certainly deserved.

One thing that has puzzled me for several years is the side of Merry Acres Middle School, which has large letters proclaiming the school as a School of Excellence. My memory is that this distinction was achieved when Dr. Mike Manning was principal close to 20 years ago.

If it has been so designated since that time, great — but misleading if not.

A solution would be to either (1) remove the sign; (2) add the year or years of the excellence designation; (3) admit that the designation as a School of Excellence has been misleading the public for the years it wasn’t a School of Excellence, or (4) re-earn the designation.
